Uber For Travelers: What You Should Know

In the last few years you may have heard of an app called UBER, something that has challenged the taxi service industry as we know it, by allowing people to order a ride with just the click of a button. Passengers on Blount Small Ship Adventures are often inquisitive about new emerging technology. They are also savvy travelers – which is why we decided to create this post. Uber could be the perfect tool to use from the airport to Blount’s ships on your next cruise.

It’s inexpensive, convenient and easy to use. If you are a traveler and have never heard of it, it’s time to give it a whirl!

Why People Love It:
• Operates 24/7 in hundreds of cities and towns worldwide
• Less expensive than standard taxi cabs
• The app uses GPS location to tell the driver where to pick you and drop you off
• Payment is automatic since your card is hooked up to the app
• No tipping required! – this is all part of Uber’s business model
• Your ride will often show up within minutes

Is it safe?
All Uber drivers must complete an online background check to ensure they have a clean driving record before joining the Uber team. Also, every vehicle must be insured and undergo an inspection. Passengers rate their driver out of 5 stars, based on overall service and car cleanliness. Uber drivers must maintain above a 4.6 star average to continue driving for the company.

How do I download the app?

Most importantly, you will need a smart phone in order to use Uber.

Interested in creating an account? Watch the video above OR follow these simple steps to set up your account.

1. Download and install the Uber app by Uber Technologies, Inc. (it’s free) on your iPhone, Android or Windows device. Open the app and enter your phone number. Next, click “Create an Account” and follow each step to provide a phone number, email, password and your name. Then, sign in with your new account.

2. Getting a ride – Click the “Where to?” box and type your location and destination. This way the driver will know where you’re going before you get into the car.

3. Click Request Uber after you double-check your location and destination. Once a driver accepts your request, your map will display the driver’s location and you can watch a picture of the driver’s car move on the map. The pin at your pickup location will show the driver's time of arrival in minutes. The app also notifies you about one minute before the driver arrives. You will also get your driver’s name, vehicle make and model, and license plate number.

4. Pickup – When your driver arrives, confirm each other’s names and your destination point.

Uber has become a favorite tool for avid travelers. If you are looking for a ride, simply open your Uber app and it will identify your location. Tell the app which shopping center you would like to go to or perhaps a museum. Press “Request” Uber and your ride will be on its way to you.  Not only is it more cost effective than a traditional taxi but it is also easy to use (once you get the hang of it). Next time you travel, give Uber a try – it might just become your favorite way to get around!
