Just How Grand is Grand Manan?
As you sail the Bay of Fundy between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, the quaint island of Grand Manan will immediately catch your eye. As the Shallow Tail lighthouse guides you to land, keep an eye out for the marine wildlife that are bound to be welcoming you to the island as well. Grand Manan is the perfect destination for a quiet, relaxed, yet adventurous getaway.
Grand Manan is a great location to get in touch with nature, and the opportunities are endless. One of the most popular adventures is whale and seabird watching at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy. Because the bay is a natural habitat for schools of fish and zooplankton, an array of whales, dolphins, seals, and seabirds are often found in the area. Because the sea animals in the bay are so abundant, it is sometimes even possible to see some of the animals from some of the lighthouses on the Island! The island is also perfect for kayaking, hiking and biking the many trails with one of a kind views, birdwatching, or visiting the Grand Manan Art Gallery or Museum.
The people of Grand Manan are extremely proud of their heritage and their lighthouses. The word “Manan” comes from the Maliseet-Passamaquoddy-Penobscot people’s ‘Man-an-ook,’ meaning ‘island place’ or ‘the island.’ Many believe that the island was once a safe place for the Passamaquoddy elderly, although there is no actual proof. Their lighthouses are another important piece of what makes the island so special. The Shallow Tail Light, built in 1860, is a symbol of the island and is exactly the image that comes to your mind when you think of a picturesque lighthouse scene. The lighthouse and the surrounding area are preserved by The Shallow Tail Lighthouse Society. If you had to find a place to enjoy a picnic or sunset, this iconic lighthouse on the island would be it!
The best part of Grand Manan, besides the breathtaking views and endless activities, is that the island is casual, laid back, and relaxed. Grand Manan invites you to get comfortable, explore, and feel like a local. It is one of Blount Small Ship Adventure's favorite ports on it's 12 day cruise through the Canadian maritimes. So how grand is Grand Manan? It's time to experience it for yourself!
