My late father, Luther H. Blount, coined that phrase in 1966 when he launched our cruise line American Canadian Caribbean Line (ACCL). A legendary American ship designer, engineer and innovator, my father dedicated his life to building ships. He invented features that would help take you to amazing destinations usually only accessible by private yacht. And, although we have changed our name to Blount Small Ship Adventures, we intend to continue Luther’s dream of taking you away from the usual… away from crowds of tourists and manufactured experiences and getting you closer to adventure. Our amazing small ships are specially designed to take you closer to the places and people often out of reach.
Thanks to my father’s patented ship designs and innovations, we can anchor, dock or even “bow land” right on an isolated beach or shoreline. Our retractable pilot houses let us navigate the low bridges of places like the Erie Canal, literally going where no other overnight cruise lines can. And with never more than 96 guests, a casual onboard atmosphere and personalized service is always guaranteed.
It’s not just the innovations that our line owes to my father, but the spirit of our adventures, too. Dad was informal, less into pretense and more into experiences. He was authentic and original in everything he did and today his adventurous, innovative and friendly spirit is infused in everything we do.
Mark Twain once said, “The older I get, the smarter my father gets.” After working for my father for the past 30 years and most recently in taking the helm of his company 3 years ago, I’ve come to appreciate that quote even more. I’ve also come to a greater appreciation of my father’s accomplishments. And, as his cruise line plans to celebrate 45 years in business in 2011, it only seems fitting that we pay a more obvious tribute to him.
And that’s why we’re becoming Blount Small Ship Adventures. To honor my father, his dreams of new adventures and his goal to deliver them in a way no one else can match. While we are changing our name, we’ve never been closer to what Luther Blount intended his original vision to become.
To all our past guests we say welcome back. And to all our new friends we say, as Dad would have, “Welcome aboard!”
